Developing your rural property is a lot of fun. It’s amazing what strategic dirt work and some low-water crossings can do to make your property more accessible throughout the year.
Here in North Texas our rainfall varies dramatically depending on the time of year. It’s not unusual for streams to dry up completely during late summer and early fall, only to reach flood heights several months later during major rain events.
If you have seasonal creeks running through your property, these wet winter and spring months can make parts of your property virtually inaccessible 6 months out of the year. Fortunately, residential water crossings make it possible to access all parts of your property year-round.
The most common type of residential water crossing is the low water crossing. This is essentially a low concrete “road” that can be used to cross a seasonal creek any time the creek is not at a flood stage.
While we have the ability here at EW Enterprise to build both an “on-grade” water crossing or a low water crossing, the low water crossing is considerably more popular with most of our residential customers.
Compared to an on-grade water crossing, the main advantage is cost savings. A low water crossing requires less site excavation, smaller culverts, and simpler concrete forms. All of that adds up to substantially reduced costs.
Low water crossings can be a great investment in the value of your property. A property with great access is more attractive to buyers and can help you attract a better-quality buyer.
The exact specifications of a residential water crossing depend on various factors, such as whether you’re inside a municipality, and how much water is normally flowing through your creek.
Most low-water crossings have several small culverts to allow some water to pass underneath the crossing. The sides are sloped to allow flood waters to easily flow up over the top without damaging the water crossing structure and avoiding erosion issues around the sides of the water crossing. If desired, we can add a curb as shown in the photo.
Whether your water crossing needs are simple or complex, we have the manpower and the expertise to handle all your needs. We’re equally comfortable with small residential crossings and large commercial development projects.
