Headwalls are critical for managing water flow and controlling erosion. This is where concrete headwalls play an indispensable role. Let's explore headwalls, why they are so important, and why our concrete headwalls are an excellent choice in most scenarios.
Headwalls are critical structures positioned at the outlet or inlet of stormwater drains, culverts, or ditches, acting as a bridge between the drainage conduit and the surrounding environment. They reinforce the ends of drainage pipes, counteract erosion, and help water flow from one area to another.
Without headwalls, areas around culverts are prone to erosion, which can create major structural and environmental issues. For instance, in one case where a water crossing spanned the width of a large creek near Cleburne, the contractor failed to get the headwalls installed before a major rain event. Without the headwalls in place to stabilize the crossing, the crossing was destroyed. After the crossing was rebuilt, we were hired to come in and pour the headwalls, successfully creating a highly durable water crossing structure.
Extreme erosion can compromise adjacent structures, result in land loss, and pose safety risks. Furthermore, unguarded pipe ends are more likely to get blocked by debris, which can snowball into other problems. Headwalls counter these issues by providing a supportive structure for the pipes, moderating water velocity, and spreading out water flow to reduce erosion.
Although headwalls can be crafted from various materials, concrete headwalls are by far the most common, and for good reason.
For developers, opting for concrete headwalls is a smart choice. Whether it's for residential, commercial, or public infrastructure, efficient and resilient water management systems are important for the long term success of any development.
We have extensive experience in pouring concrete headwalls for a variety of clients – from the land owner who simply wants improved access to his property, to county projects, and large scale development projects across Texas.
Our team is able to build any type of water crossing headwall whether that's a private project,or a project with TXDOT specifications.
