A polished concrete floor is one of the most low maintenance floors you can get. They’re both durable and easy to clean. It’s why Clay Miller and 1377 Contracting chose to have us polish the floors in two of their new buildings.
1377 Contracting is building a new RV park near Itasca, TX. Like many modern RV parks, this one features an office building and a laundry room. Both buildings are likely to have a lot of traffic, necessitating a durable floor surface.
We poured the commercial slab on grade concrete foundations for both buildings. The office building features a 20x40 ff heavy duty slab, and the laundry features an 18x30 ft heavy duty slab.
After the concrete had cured sufficiently and the building’s interior framing was complete, it was time for the floor polishing process to begin.
When sanding a really rough piece of wood, you typically start with a large grit sandpaper and work your way down to a fine sandpaper in order to get a very smooth finish. Polishing concrete works in much the same way.
At first the polishing machine will be loaded with a diamond abrasive pad that makes quick work of larger bumps and imperfections. Then a less aggressive polishing pad is installed on the machine. As the project progresses, the polishing pads are switched out for more and more fine grits.
The final step is a both a grinding and sealing combination. With an extremely fine abrasive pad on the machine, a sealer is applied to the concrete. The sealer is essentially “worked into” the concrete surface, creating a dense, glassy smooth surface.
Our team did an excellent job of keeping our customer up to speed throughout the entire process. Any glitches were resolved quickly, and the finished product looks great. His polished floors are going to provide many years of low maintenance service.
